Fitting that my first memory would be of them. I was only five at the time though. They wouldn't go after me at that age. That didn't say anything for mother however. They didn't care she was working with a patient. Her protests fell on deaf ears and I got to watch what being fed from would look like in full detail. It would be my own fate one day. It was terrifying, yet I found myself grossly fascinated. Then they left without a word. Mother was flushed and disheveled afterwards. When she turned to look at me, it was the first time I ever saw shame too.

My first time came unscheduled. It had been my fault for not paying more attention that day. When I got pulled to the side, my natural instinct was to struggle. It wasn't until I felt the strength of those arms that I knew what trouble had found me. The whole time I did my best to block out what I felt. Even if it was the norm for humans like me, I felt violated. Something was taken from me that day that I would never be able to get back. Whether or not they were punished for what they did doesn't matter. The damage was done. The shame that had been mother's was mine too now.

When her health started crumbling, I felt like a piece of me was following suit. Maybe it was the frequent feedings. Mother was a beautiful woman, no doubt about that. She must have been delicious too for it to happen so often. It could have been the stress too. Maybe she had finally had enough and her body was sympathizing with her. Either way, her patients had to start coming to me when her hand no longer had the steady precision they once did. Soon mother became my most frequent patient of them all. Every time I have to see her, the marks of my neck always ache. I know what lies ahead now. I'm scared, but I have work to do.♦ THE PLAYER ♦
