In another life, in another time, she might've thought rummaging through decades old debris was the lowest low she could've ever come to. As it was, the only thought going through her head was frustration at finding nothing. It had been a long shot, truthfully. The airport was a well-picked husk by this point. Desperation, however, could prove very persuasive. She was at least willing to try.
"Shit." It came out in a soft hiss. Hours of excavating and searching had accumulated to nothing more than rotten magazines and stale candy previous scavengers hadn't deemed worthy of taking. She needed a break; and if the sound coming from her stomach was any indication, she needed food too. Tossing aside an old magazine that separated messily on the floor, she slumped behind the counter and pulled her backpack around.
She didn't have much, but her stomach wasn't exactly giving her an option. As she ate, she observed her surroundings. The only things left were the outdated papers and disgusting bagged treats. She'd already tried one, and the result remained in one of the trash bins nearby. She'd been lucky in finding a few beverages that she'd stuffed away, but whether or not they were still good was yet to be seen.
All that left was the number of books in the corner. Quite a few were missing, but a good amount remained. They had no use for someone who couldn't read, but maybe they would have value for someone who could. She leaned her head back against the desk while contemplating the possibility.
Then there was a noise.
Immediately her body tensed and she froze. It could've been nothing. A gust of wind rattling something farther down the remainder of the hall.
But what if it wasn't?
She hadn't survived so long to take that sort of chance.
With a painful but quiet slowness, she shifted to get back to her feet but remain behind the desk. Staying crouched, she pulled out her mother's hunting knife from her pack and crept towards the sides. With learn cautiousness, she just barely peeked around the side to see if it had been nothing after all.
